From humble beginnings to Houston restaurant empire, David Herrera's legacy started with one goal

Cypress – As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, The Herrera family of Cypress could be the poster family for perseverance, unity, and the embodiment of the Latino dream.

At the heart of this journey is David Herrera, a Salvadoran immigrant whose hard work and dedication laid the foundation for his family’s legacy. David Herrera arrived in the United States from El Salvador in 1979, at 18 years old, with no friends, family, or money. His first job was as a busboy, but his ambition and dedication quickly propelled him to the role of waiter, which he held for over two decades. During this time, David met his wife, Alicia, and together they began to build their family and dream of owning a restaurant. David’s restaurant journey started with Alicia’s Mexican Grille, a nod to the love of his life. That first venture has since expanded into four locations across the Houston area.

For David’s sons, Marvin, Ubaldo, and Dario, the restaurant business was more than a career; it was something they were introduced to by watching their father’s work ethic as children. Marvin and Dario both have restaurants in their names Marvino’s Italian Steakhouse and Dario’s Steakhouse & Seafood. Ubaldo’s daughters were the inspiration for Galiana’s Tex Mex. It is a blend of “Gabrielle” and “Aliana.”

Despite the challenges of the restaurant industry, David instilled a deep sense of commitment in his children. Mr. Herrera credits their success to hard work. He also says anyone looking to own their own restaurant needs to experience every aspect of the restaurant from the table to the stove.

As Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us of the contributions of the Latino community, the Herrera family is just one example of what can be achieved through commitment to family and hard work.
