These tips will help you at your next mammogram

HOUSTON – Breast cancer statistics are a stark reminder of the reality many women face, with one in eight women in the United States being diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. Many of these cases occur in women without a familial history of the disease.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which emphasizes the importance of incorporating mammograms into one’s yearly health regimen.

Houston Life’s Melanie Camp spoke with Dr. Kenny Sam, a Breast Radiologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann, who shared insights on the correct approach to mammography. From whether to forego deodorant on the day of the test to the best attire and the optimal time of the month to schedule a mammogram, the discussion is rich with valuable information.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a timely reminder for women to prioritize mammograms annually. The American College of Radiology (ACR) advises women to start annual mammogram screenings at the age of 40. Earlier screenings may be recommended for those with specific risk factors, such as a genetic predisposition. It is also vital to be vigilant about any unusual symptoms, including persistent breast pain, lumps, changes in the nipple, or swelling in the armpits, and to consult a doctor for a mammogram if these symptoms arise.

Mammograms are a critical tool for early breast cancer detection, potentially identifying the disease before physical symptoms like lumps become noticeable. Recognized as the only screening method proven to decrease breast cancer mortality, mammograms have contributed to a nearly 40% reduction in breast cancer deaths in the U.S. since 1990, according to the ACR.

Feeling apprehensive about mammography is normal, but preparation can alleviate some of these concerns. Here are some preparatory tips for women:

- If you menstruate, scheduling your mammogram for one to two weeks after your period may be ideal, as this is when breasts are usually less tender.

- To prevent ‘false positives,’ avoid applying deodorant, perfume, lotion, or any other products to your underarms or chest area before the exam.

- Opt for a two-piece outfit for convenience, as you’ll only need to remove your top for the procedure.

- Leave jewelry at home and tie your hair back to avoid interference with the mammogram.

- Be sure to inform the technician if you are breastfeeding, have breast implants, or have any current breast concerns.

With 17 breast care centers throughout Houston, Memorial Hermann prioritizes accessibility to screenings. There is sure to be a clinic close to your home or workplace offering flexible scheduling options, including early morning and evening appointments and 3D mammography at all locations. These options aim to accommodate your needs and ensure your breast health is monitored regularly.
