Houston non-profit ‘Bridge The Gaps’ fills needs for at-risk students

Houston – Omar Durham knew what it felt like to work for an overburdened education system. After more than 13 years teaching he founded Bridge The Gaps.

“Encouraging our youth isn’t enough. They need our full support and mentorship; what better way to reach them than with what interests them.”

BTG is on a mission to close the cultural, emotional, mental, and educational gaps for underprivileged and at-risk students. Since the start, the organization has made a big impact in the community, donating over 10,000 volunteer hours, providing 500 meals during the holidays, and distributing essential back-to-school and Christmas items to families in need.

Bridge The Gaps is working to reverse that by creating positive experiences for these students—both mentally and physically.” One of the organization’s key initiatives is its in-school programs, such as Real Talk 4 Reel and BAMM (The Behavior Attitude Mental Mentoring), which provide students with life skills, mentorship, and emotional support. By focusing on real-world challenges and solutions, these programs aim to keep students motivated in their education while preparing them for the future. Athletics also play a central role in Bridge The Gaps’ mission.

The latest community event includes a sneaker kickback event and looking ahead, the non-profit is planning its annual turkey drive to provide meals to families during the holidays.

Bridge The Gaps is calling for more support from the community. The organization is seeking corporate partnerships and donations to be bigger and better in the upcoming year. For more information on how to support or partner with Bridge The Gaps, click here.
