HOUSTON – Raise your hand if a new puppy is on your holiday wish list this year! (Pretty much everyone, right? 😜)
The holidays, aka Puppy Season is coming, and Houston’s puppy experts at Believe In Dog Training typically experience an influx of puppies from December through March.
People often think mostly about training after they get their new puppy, but how should you prepare before you get your puppy?
Our puppy expert Stephanie Bennett at Believe In Dog Training in The Heights has some helpful tips for errorless potty training:
- Set your puppy up for success! Take them out frequently and always immediately after eating and/or drinking, a play session, a nap, or coming out of the crate or confinement area.
- Give your pup 5-10 minutes to empty themselves. If they don’t eliminate, put them inside their crate for 10-20 minutes, and then immediately try again.
- Throw potty parties for success and reward with 3 tiny pieces of liver or cheese
- Don’t let your puppy have free rein of the house.
- Never leave your puppy in a crate for longer than she can hold it.
- Never use harsh punishments that may cause fear or confusion such as scolding, spanking, or rubbing a puppy’s nose in the mess.
