Here’s how AARP is helping the 48 million Americans who provide unpaid care to loved ones

Houston – It’s the holidays and chances are, you’re seeing loved ones more than usual. Many people like to avoid awkward or difficult conversations during holiday gatherings but it might be the best time.

The reality is that over 48 million Americans provide unpaid care for family members or loved ones. The total cost is around $600 billion. Caregiving can be a rewarding journey, but it’s also challenging and overwhelming. This is the case for people with and without a support system because caregiving can look different depending on the case.

In the player above, Houston Life co-host Derrick Shore talked to Jennifer Wandrey, associate state director of outreach & advocacy for AARP Texas. Several topics came up in conversation including where families start when preparing for this new journey, what are some of the biggest challenges caregivers face, how can resources like this guide help them, when it’s time to start planning, why self-care is such a big part of caregiving, and how can AARP help with that.
