How artist Sophia Buddenhagen’s worldly upbringing inspired her colorful career

HOUSTON – One look at Sophia Buddenhagen’s colorful, vibrant art and you’ll realize she has a love for adventure and positivity. Born in Germany and then growing up in places like Colorado, California, Egypt, Gabon and the West Indies, Sophia spent much of her childhood outside -- either near the mountains, or the ocean.

“I would paint a lot. I would just sit on the balcony, look at the jungle and paint,” says Buddenhagen.

For Sophia, moving around wasn’t easy, but it helped her sharpen her skills.

“Moving so much, painting was my refuge,” she said.

Today, Buddenhagen has settled in Houston, where she teaches art and has continued painting and selling her artwork through gallery shows and websites like Society 6. Now, she’s able to reach a global audience of customers who appreciate her talent and positive vibes.

When she’s not painting, chances are good Sophia is enjoying an adventure somewhere -- hiking in the mountains, surfing the ocean, or perhaps on a skateboard somewhere in between.

Check out her Society 6 online shop and watch her full interview with Houston Life’s Derrick Shore to learn more about Sophia’s dynamic life as an artist, educator and explorer.
