Sons of boxing legend Johnny Tapia train at Martinez Boxing Gym

Head Coach David Martinez, a seasoned boxing trainer with 17 years of professional experience, is gearing up for a momentous occasion: preparing Johnny Tapia’s son, Nicco Tapia, for his first professional boxing match.

Martinez Boxing Houston, a renowned training hub in the heart of Houston, is where Nicco trains twice a day under the expert guidance of Coach Martinez. With an exceptional track record, Martinez has trained numerous top prospects, earning recognition from major boxing organizations including the WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO, Golden Boy Promotions, and Top Rank. His experience and commitment to the sport have earned him widespread respect, including being named Coach of the Year at the 2016 Road to Rio Olympic Qualifiers.

For Martinez, this is a full-circle moment. “It’s an honor to work with the Tapia family, especially Nicco. Johnny Tapia was a legend in the ring, and now I’m helping his sons carve out their own paths,” says Martinez. Johnny Tapia, affectionately known as “Mi Vida Loca,” was a five-time world champion, a boxing icon who captured titles across three weight divisions. His legacy lives on, and now, Nicco is following in his father’s footsteps, albeit with a few differences—he’s a southpaw, unlike his right-handed father, and stands taller and stronger than his legendary dad.

Houston’s diverse boxing scene offers an ideal setting for any aspiring fighter. “If you want to become a complete fighter, Houston is the place to be,” says Martinez. The city’s rich boxing history and variety of styles provide the perfect environment for athletes like Nicco to thrive.

Nicco Tapia feels his father’s presence every time he steps into the ring. “I feel like he’s right there with me, guiding me and protecting me,” Nicco shares. Johnny Tapia’s spirit remains a source of motivation, and his iconic phrase, “Yesterday’s gone, tomorrow never comes, but today I’m here,” resonates deeply with his son as he prepares for the fight of his life.

As Nicco continues his journey towards his professional debut, under the watchful eye of Coach Martinez, the future of the Tapia family in boxing looks bright. With the legacy of Johnny Tapia fueling him, Nicco is ready to make his own mark in the world of boxing.
