Lighting tips to transform your home: insights from an expert

HOUSTON – If you’ve been contemplating a home update but aren’t ready to invest in new furnishings, consider the impact of lighting. Lighting is a simple change that can dramatically transform your space. Houston Life’s Melanie Camp recently visited Star Furniture to gather expert tips from interior designer Jessica Deuce on how to use lighting effectively in your home.

Jessica Deuce, a design collaborator with Star Furniture, emphasizes that lighting can significantly impact a room’s ambiance. Whether you’re looking to make a bold statement or subtly enhance your space, lighting is key. For instance, a chandelier can add drama and elegance to a dining area, especially when paired with the right table and chairs. Deuce advises matching the shape of your light fixture to your table—round tables pair well with round fixtures, while rectangular tables suit rectangular lights.

When considering lighting for a console or credenza, Deuce suggests opting for tall, narrow lamps to create height without overwhelming the space. While design rules often favor odd numbers, such as arranging items in threes or fives, symmetry with two lamps can provide balance.

The scale of your bedside lamp is crucial in bedrooms. Deuce recommends choosing a lamp that is at least half the size of your nightstand. A versatile lamp with a neutral finish can complement any decor style. However, to maintain proportion, avoid lamps taller than your headboard.

Chandeliers aren’t just for dining rooms. Deuce encourages using them in bedrooms, entryways, and hallways for added drama. If you’re not a fan of ceiling fans, a chandelier above the bed can be a stylish alternative.

Floor lamps are another versatile option, perfect for spaces where a table might feel cluttered. They provide light without taking up valuable surface area, making them ideal for small tables or cozy reading nooks.

Deuce advises hanging chandeliers 30 to 36 inches above the table. This range ensures the fixture is neither too high nor too low, fitting seamlessly into the room’s design.

Finally, the right light bulbs can make or break your lighting setup. Deuce recommends a color temperature of 2700 Kelvin for a warm, inviting glow. Avoid higher temperatures, which can create harsh lighting.

For those looking to enhance their home with stylish and functional lighting, Star Furniture offers a range of options at affordable prices. With locations throughout Greater Houston and an online presence at starfurniture.com, finding the perfect lighting solution is just a visit away.
