Why a ‘prosperity salad’ should be on your table for Lunar New Year

HOUSTON – It’s a colorful dish traditionally enjoyed during Lunar New Year celebrations, particularly among Chinese communities in Malaysia and Singapore.

The prosperity salad, also known as “Yusheng,” is said to bring prosperity, abundance, and good fortune for the coming year.

The salad features raw fish (salmon or another type of sashimi-grade fish), shredded vegetables (carrots, radish, cucumber, and daikon), crispy crackers (fried wonton skins) and sauces (plum sauce, sesame oil, and sometimes five-spice powder).

Kevin Lee and Marvin He, the directors of operations with Phat Eatery, stop by Houston Life to chat about the salad, the tradition behind it, and the special technique used to serve it.
