Here’s why you need to add Bear Creek Smokehouse in Marshall to your Lone Star State bucket list

HINT: The small-town charm cannot be ignored

Houston – Bear Creek Smokehouse, is no doubt a must see in Marshall, Texas. Just four hours north of Houston on U.S. Highway 59., the Shoults Family has been serving up some of the finest smoked meats in the region for over 80 years. What began in 1943 as a modest smoked turkey business has evolved into a full-fledged family-run operation that now includes a smokehouse, a general store, a restaurant, flower shop, event venue and even a charming cottage for visitors to enjoy.

Today on Houston Life, Robbie and Tracy Shoults, shared the remarkable story of how their family business has flourished, highlighting its transformation and its deep-rooted connection to the community.

Their legacy dates back to 1943 when Robbie’s great-grandparents started selling smoked turkeys, long before the business had a smokehouse or the sprawling operations it has today. Their humble beginnings are all thanks to the local ladies coming into town to pick up turkeys.

The Shoults’ commitment to the small east Texas town is evident in their businesses and humorous marketing. In November, they opened High Horse 1898. The restaurant in downtown Marshall is just one example how they have enhanced the town’s charm and hospitality. The restaurant, located in a historic building built in 1898, it also includes a flower shop and event space. It’s part of a broader vision to create spaces where people can gather, enjoy good food, and experience the warmth and hospitality that has made Bear Creek Smokehouse a success.

During their Houston Life segment, the couple showcased a High Horse favorite, the Texas Cheesesteak sandwich which has chopped brisket with queso on a hoagie bun. They also poured a strong but delicious cocktail called the “All Hat No Cattle” which has Woodford, dark rum, coconut, orange, maple. Another fan favorite at the restaurant is the “High Falootin’ Margarita” patron, agave, Grand Marnier.
