Remembering George Floyd, 3 years after his death

(Adrienne Rison-Isom)

It’s been three years since George Floyd, who grew up in Houston’s Third Ward, was murdered at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers, sparking a nationwide reckoning on racism and policing.

For more than nine minutes, a white officer pressed his knee to the neck of Floyd, a Black man, who gasped, “I can’t breathe,” echoing Eric Garner’s last words in 2014. Video footage of Floyd’s May 25, 2020, murder was so agonizing to watch that demands for change came from across the country.

Now, three years to the day since Floyd’s murder, proponents of federal actions — such as banning chokeholds and no-knock warrants, as well as changing the so-called qualified immunity protections for law enforcement — still await signs of change.

Today on KPRC 2 News Today at 7 a.m. and KPRC 2+ NOW at 8 a.m., we speak to Sheletta Brundidge, a Fifth Ward native and children’s book author, who helped the young girl who witnessed Floyd’s murder, write a children’s book detailing the encounter, called “A Walk to the Store.” Then, Travis Cains, longtime friend of Floyd, talks about their brotherhood and his memories.

Shelby Stewart, a retired HPD Sergeant, and civil rights activist, discusses police brutality and racial bias.

Finally, a preview of “The Making of George” a free documentary screening detailing the creation of George Floyd’s sculpture at Tom Bass National Park.

Texas City police officer pulled from streets, under investigation after viral traffic stop in Buc-ee’s parking lot

(Texas City PD)

A Texas City police officer has been removed from the streets and is under investigation amid growing controversy over how he handed a traffic stop last month.

The 23-minute traffic stop, captured on Officer Scott Harrell’s body camera, happened at the Texas City Buc-ee’s when Christopher Shull stopped to fill up with gas.

“Everyone knows you cannot write tickets for traffic infractions on a private parking lot,” Shull told KPRC 2. I didn’t even know what to think.”
