Richmond teen killed in crash in Kerr County

Officials said pickup, dump truck collided

MOUNTAIN HOME, Texas – Authorities are investigating a deadly crash that claimed the life of Richmond teen.

Austin Woodfin, 17, was riding with five other athletes from Foster High School and another baseball player from Lamar Consolidated High School, when the pickup they were in was hit by a dump truck, authorities say.

"It's just hard to believe that Austin's gone," classmate Sarah Ramirez said. "He was just one of those people that everyone knew. He was always really friendly. We're hoping that (survivors) are OK.  It was a shock to hear that all of them were in the crash."

DPS troopers say a pickup truck failed to yield and was hit by a dump truck along State Road 41 northwest of Kerrville around 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

Woodfin was airlifted to a San Antonio-area hospital, but later died.

"A lot of people are still in shock," Ramirez said. "It's hard to lose someone that you've known for a really long time."

Four of the other student-athletes remain in critical condition.

DPS troopers said driver inattention on the part of the teen driver may be to blame for the crash but the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed yet.
