HOUSTON – Harris County financial crimes investigators are searching for a woman they call "The Diaper Bandit."
"She looks like, you know, a nice mom," said Sgt. L. Peterson of the Harris County Sheriff's Office Financial Crimes division.
It's not unusual to see women on spending sprees for baby supplies, but investigators say the woman caught on a Walmart's surveillance camera did so on somebody else's dime, unbeknownst to the victim who told police the checks the mystery woman used to buy the merchandise were still in her wallet in her purse.
"She was shocked. She didn't know where she got her information from. She didn't know the person," Sgt. Peterson said.
Investigators dubbed the woman "The Diaper Bandit" because they say she used counterfeit checks to buy over $300 worth of diapers at two Houston area Walmarts and close to $150 on baby blankets and baby monitors at another local childrens' store.
"Buying diapers throws off the cashier because you think, oh, she's a cute mom, she's just doing her mom duties. Going to the store, buying diapers, blankets and stuff like that," Sgt. Peterson said.
A surveillance camera also captured the woman's car in the parking lot as she was driving away from the store in east Harris County off the East Freeway. Harris County financial crimes investigators need your help in tracking her down.
"We can't do anything until we find out who she is," Sgt. Peterson said.
If you know who the alleged Diaper Bandit is, you are urged to call the Harris County Sheriff's Office Financial Crimes division at 713-967-5773.
