HOUSTON – Only four to five people were involved in a fight near Cypress Lakes High School in northwest Harris County on Friday afternoon, sheriff's detectives said.
Witnesses initially reported there were 100 teenagers involved.
About 50 people were there watching the fight, a Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesperson told Local 2 Investigates Monday.
One student went to the hospital with lacerations to his head caused by severe beating, Deputy Thomas Gilliland says. Initial reports said a teen was shot in the face.
An emergency room doctor determined the injury was caused by the beating, not a gunshot.
An 18-year-old male watching the fight did pull out a gun and fire five to six shots into the air, Gilliland says. Those shots did not injure anyone.
That 18-year-old has not been arrested or charged with a crime and Gilliland declined to give the teen's name.
The investigation is still ongoing and arrests could be made in the future.
Gilliland said there was no indication the incident was gang-related, but detectives are looking at all possible causes.
Some of the students recorded the fight on their cell phone and turned the video over to sheriff's detectives, according to Gilliland.
Security at the high school was visibly beefed up Monday and students noticed.
"We usually only have two or three policeman. Now we have about 10 policemen," student Jason Domingues told Local 2 Monday afternoon. "People feel more secure."
Parent Becky Dorantes was happy to see more visible police.
"They need security here," Dorantes said.
She brought her two high school kids to school and planned to pick them up Monday afternoon.
