Houston ISD launches cyber safety initiative, website

HOUSTON – By 2016, every high school student in Houston ISD will have a laptop, and that brings concerns about online safety. Local 2 shows you HISD's newest tool against cyber crimes.

Teachers are learning more than just how to use their laptops, but also how to teach kids about them.

"They also need to know what it mean to live in a digital world," said HISD Chief Technology Officer Lenny Schad.

Students will also be taught about issues like digital citizenship, social media, cyberbullying and various other cyber safety topics.

"They need to understand what a digital footprint is. That post or inappropriate picture that you post as a 15 year old, that will come back and haunt you," Schad said.

While student's internet activity is often very controlled in school, it's when they're away from campus that HISD knows they could find trouble. That's why the district also has a new cyber security website for parents to learn how to continue the education at home.

"So it's really helping the kids understand the social aspect to what it means to blog and be on Facebook and Tweet," said Schad.
