Bus driver leaves more than 50 elementary kids on side of road

BRAZORIA, Texas – More than 50 elementary students going home from Barrow Elementary School were left on the side of the road for more than 30 minutes Tuesday afternoon when the driver decided to stop the bus and walk off the job.

Hayden Alexander, 5, was on the bus when it stopped on County Road 742.

"The bus driver got off and left us on the side of the road," he said.

KPRC2 spoke with several parents and students and many tell the same story. The driver stopped the bus, said she was done and walked off.

The Columbia Brazoria Independent School District confirms the driver walked off the bus to call for back up and claims it was because the kids were being rowdy.

However, less than 24 hours later, the bus driver, whose name isn't be released, has officially given her notice and resigned.

A backup driver did show up to the scene and ended up taking the children home, but not before causing concern for parents.

"My concerns are that it gets taken care of. There is no protocol, no one called us to make sure everyone got our kids home, so they don't even know if our kids got home," parent Tonya Scott said.

The Columbia-Brazoria Independent School District released footage of the incident Saturday.
