HOUSTON – A "jugging" suspect led police on a chase in southwest Houston Monday after attempting to rob an undercover officer, according to Houston police.
Jugging is a term officers used for suspects who follow unaware customers, typically from banks, and steal money the customer has withdrawn.
This particular crime started at the Hanmi Bank on Hillcroft Avenue, near the Southwest Freeway.
The undercover officer was then followed to a spot near the old Sharpstown Mall.
"When the undercover officer stopped and parked, (the suspect) jumped out with a tire iron and attempted to rob the undercover officer," said Lt. J.C. Wood, with the Houston Police Department.
The suspect then tried to flee and led police on a chase that lasted just a few miles and ended with a wreck.
"I'm glad that I am alive. It was like a bull coming," said driver Maria Echevarria.
Echevarria's tiny Fiat 500 was hit by the suspect's Lincoln Navigator.
Her car then hit another car. Neither innocent bystander was seriously injured.
Police identified the suspect, now in custody as Brandon Jones.
Jones, 22, has criminal charges pending that include aggravated robbery and felony evading.
He has previous convictions for drug possession and theft.
