GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas – Residents in east Galveston County are dealing with major flooding frustrations after a day of downpours.
"This water right here is supposed to go all the way to Avenue E ditch, it ain't never gonna make it," said homeowner Clyde Newman.
Newman says heavy rains can turn the streets around his Bacliff neighborhood into rivers in a matter of minutes.
"Since 1988 all the way down to Bayshore Drive the ditches going down to the bay have not been enlarged, why I don't know, but they need to fix it," he says.
Galveston County Commissioner Ryan Dinnard says the county is working to fix it. He says a recently completed drainage project along Bayshore Drive should help he said. But Dinnard acknowledges there is more work to be done.
"You get a lot of homes in a small area that develop without a lot of comprehensive planning and it leads to some drainage issues. These are things the county is having to go in after the fact and repair or fix and that's a challenge," Dinnard said.
