PD: inmate hanged himself in Houston city jail

HOUSTON – An inmate at the Houston city jail was found hanging inside his cell Thursday afternoon, according to Houston police.

Police said Hung Do, 38, was arrested overnight Wednesday for possession of drugs. He underwent and passed a mental health evaluation and was booked into the jail at 61 Riesner St.

Investigators said Do used his own clothing to hang himself.

"By all accounts, he was a model prisoner. (There were) no issues at all, according to what we can determine from inmates and the jailers we've spoken to," HPD spokesman Kese Smith said.

Do attempted to make a phone call at lunchtime and witnesses said he became agitated when he couldn't reach the person he was trying to call.

Police said he then asked to go back to his cell, where he was alone.

One of the man's two suitemates returned to the cell after lunch around 1:30 p.m. and found the man hanging in the cell, according to police. Officials said  prisoners informed a jailer, who called emergency medical services with the Houston Fire Department.

KPRC 2 was told that crews arrived and performed CPR on Do, but he was pronounced dead.

Do's death remains under investigation by the Houston Police Department's homicide division, internal affairs division and the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
