SWAT standoff ends after suspect falls through ceiling after tear gas deployed

HOUSTON – One man was taken into custody after a SWAT standoff in southwest Houston.

Anthony House, 24, faces a charge of aggravated assault of a police officer.

According to Houston police, officers were attempting to serve an aggravated robbery warrant on House at a home in the 10200 block of Tangiers.

Officers spotted House driving his vehicle and attempted to pull him over, but house sped off.

House lost control and crashed his vehicle on Porto Rico Road, then took off running in a neighborhood.

He found a home unlocked on Tangiers at Gessner, and ran inside, police say.  The homeowner was in the house at the time, but managed to run out.

The suspect barricaded himself inside and HPD SWAT was called to the scene.

After a few hours of unsuccessful negotiation attempts, SWAT officers decided to deploy tear gas to force the House out of the home, but he would not surrender.

Officers then made entry, but still did not see the suspect.

Officers decided to search the attic and, as they were pulling down the ladder, House allegedly began shooting from above.

Officers returned fire and retreated from the house.

They tried to negotiate with House againg, and when he refused, they deployed tear gas again.

"At that point the suspect began moving around in the attic, he ended up falling through the ceiling, and at that point the SWAT team entered the residence and immediately took him into custody," Victor Senties, HPD spokesperson, said.  "He was checked out by EMS and is going to be transported to jail."

No officers were injured.  Senties said it was a close call.

"In actuality they were very, very lucky because they were in close proximity to that suspect.  They could have been seriously injured or killed," Senties said.
