HOUSTON – Today is a day a lot of people here have been looking forward to, a day when we surprised one lucky viewer with a year's worth of free Kroger groceries.
This year, our winner who thought she was just winning a $500 gift card also had a surprise for us. She planned to use the whole $500 to buy school supply kits for the Kroger-KPRC 2 Backpack Boosters School Supply Drive.
Terri Clifton is one of more than 28,000 people who entered the Kroger Grocery Giveaway. The mother and grandmother entered a Kroger store in Spring thinking she won a $500 gift card.
But the surprise and prize were much bigger once a flash mob appeared out of nowhere. Watch flash mob here.
"Oh this is great! This is fabulous! I thought I was going to get a $500 gift certificate. I was excited over that. Oh my gosh. Terri Clifton, hopefully help a lot of people. This is fabulous. Thank you," Clifton said. "We were actually going to take the whole $500 and buy 71 of those little packs, I'd like to buy some of them," said Clifton.
"It was all about Terri's face when we announced her as the winner," said Ron Parucki, VP of Merchandising for Southwest Division. "It's a way for us to give back to the community."
Special thanks to Kroger and the LDA Dance Team for helping with the surprise. Watch the flash mob practice here.
What an awesome surprise that Clifton still plans on using some of her prize to benefit our Backpack Boosters School Supply Drive. You can donate to help local students at any local Kroger store any time until Aug. 16.
