HOUSTON – The Houston Zoo's first addition of 2016 is a baby gerenuk.
The female long-necked gazelle was born on Jan. 9 and weighed in at 3.5 kg. The calf is named January in honor of her birth month.
January can be observed at the Zoo with her mom, Josie, and her dad, Mr. Lee, and her brother, Julius.
The word gerenuk means giraffe-necked in the Somali language. Gerenuk have a unique ability -- they can stand and balance themselves on their hind legs to reach the higher leaves that many other animals cannot reach.
Zoo officials said gerenuk have been known to stand on their hind legs at just two weeks old.
