HOUSTON – The Houston Police Department’s bicycle relay team began its Pedal for a Cure journey to San Francisco Friday morning.
Mayor Sylvester Turner wished them luck during the 35th anniversary sendoff ceremony.
The team is biking more than 2,500 miles to raise funds to fight for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Officers have traveled almost 74,000 miles and raised more than $5.7 million to help find a cure and improve the quality of life for those with blood-related cancers.

To keep the team inspired, each member is wearing a “Dog Tag” with the name of his or her honored patient or survivor.
The team will ride for 24 hours every day and hopes to get to San Francisco by July 1.
