Vigil held for Clements High School swimmer who died suddenly

SUGAR LAND, Texas – The outpouring of community support continues following the sudden death of a Fort Bend County high school senior this weekend.

Clements High School senior Brian Yuen died Saturday after swimming in a meet in Sugar Land.

Friends and family honored him at a vigil Sunday evening at Don Cook Natatorium. Students, teachers and coaches are emotionally broken over the sudden and tragic death of the gifted athlete.

"His swims have always been ridiculously fast," said Kate Mussler, a fellow swimmer. "You know he was absolutely amazing."

Yuen was said to be universally loved at Clements High. He was a star on the swim team. He was less than a year from graduating from school.

Following the school swim meet, Yuen suffered some kind of traumatic physical event. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

"I just know he had a medical emergency and had CPR at the pool for 15 minutes," said Brian Yuen's brother, Arthur. "He was rushed to the ER hospital and they tried to revive him for, like, 40  minutes. That's what I've heard, and he just never responded."

Arthur Yuen said family and friends will never forget him.

"He's going to live on," Arthur Yuen said. "He's going to push me to be the best I can be. He's always going to outshine me when it comes to stuff like that."

Officials said that crisis teams will be at all FBISD high schools when classes resume Tuesday, but immediate support is being provided to the student's fellow athletes.

An account to help Yuen's family has been set up on GoFundMe.com. Click/tap here to donate.
