Longtime Houston sportscaster Bob Allen dies at 70

HOUSTON – Bob Allen, a longtime sports broadcaster in Houston, died Wednesday night after a bout with cancer. He was 70 years old.

A Houston native, Allen began his television career in 1974 at KTRK-TV, where he quickly was named sports director. He spent 38 years at that station, giving him the longest tenure of any major market sports anchor in the country.

In 2013, Allen moved to KHOU-TV, where he spent the remainder of his career.

Allen was heavily involved with the Special Olympics and The Sunshine Kids, where he served on the board of directors for both organizations.

Over the years, Allen won many awards, including being named Houston’s favorite sportscaster by readers of The Houston Chronicle.

His family said Allen peacefully died about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Allen leaves behind a daughter and a brother.

Allen's family released a statement that read:

"On behalf of Bob Allen's family, we are so incredibly touched by the love and support shown to us during this difficult time. My dad valued his place in the Houston community, and the encouragement he received from you over the last two years gave him more strength and comfort than you will ever know.

"We are in the process of planning a private Memorial Service for Bob's family, friends, colleagues and loved ones."

During his career, Allen covered the finest moments of the city’s sports teams. He also interviewed sports legends like Muhammad Ali.

According to his Facebook page, Allen was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2015. Shortly after, he took a leave of absence. In February, Allen announced that he was cancer-free.

“I feel like I’m on the downhill run,” Allen wrote.

KHOU-TV released the following statement about Allen’s passing:

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague Bob Allen. Bob was a local news icon, a true original who covered Houston sports in his own unique style for more than 40 years. He created a strong and lasting bond with sports fans because he covered the games from their perspective. Bob had the courage to tell it like it is. In addition to sports, Bob was passionate about community service. He was a longtime supporter of many local non-profits, especially those which benefited children. We consider ourselves fortunate to have been able to work alongside Bob and learn so much from him during his tenure at KHOU 11.  He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the entire Houston community."
