Dekaney High School student arrested after bringing loaded gun to school, police say

SPRING, Texas – A Dekaney High School student was arrested Friday morning after bringing a loaded gun to school, district officials said.

Spring Independent School District police said they were notified Thursday that a student was potentially in possession of a firearm. The student was stopped by officials before entering the school, police said.

Police found the weapon and the student was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm in a prohibited area, officials said.

Police said they do not know what the student's intentions were.

District officials said they are taking this matter very seriously and the safety of their staff and students are top priority.

Dekaney High School sent the following message via email to all parents Friday:

"As background, yesterday afternoon we received a tip that a student potentially was in possession of a firearm. Based on this information, school administrators immediately began an investigation. This morning in coordination with Spring ISD’s police department, the student in question was stopped before entering the campus. It was at this point that the student was indeed found to be in possession of a firearm and arrested. The gun was immediately confiscated and the student has been charged with possession of a firearm in a prohibited area.

"Please know that we take this matter very seriously. The safety of our students and staff is always our absolute top priority and we will take every precaution to ensure they have a safe and secure learning environment. Please feel free to call me if you have questions or concerns at 281-891-7260. Again, this is an important message for Dekaney High School parents from Principal David Baxter."
