HOUSTON – The Houston City Council is helping add more city cameras ahead of next year's Super Bowl.
On Wednesday, the council approved $900,000 in grant-funded contracts to acquire and install new cameras in and around Super Bowl-related venues. The money will also go toward maintaining and supporting the city's current public safety video network.

Mayor Sylvester Turner said the new cameras will not only help keep people safe in special events like the Super Bowl, but also give the Houston Police Department, "more eyes across the city every day."
The mayor also said the cameras will help detect and prevent threats remotely, so resources can be shifted toward community policing, investigations and protecting neighborhoods from crime.
The City of Houston's current public safety video network covers downtown, the Texas Medical Center, and local sports and event venues.
The contracts are funded by the Urban Area Security Initiative, a federal terrorism prevention, preparedness and response grant provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Super Bowl LI will take place at NRG Stadium on Feb. 5.
