Police said the victim, a 22-year-old blind man, had been walking with another blind person and attempted to cross Tidwell when he stepped into the street.

The victim's companion, who could distinguish shadows, thought a vehicle was approaching and tried to pull the victim back onto the shoulder, police said. The victim was then struck by a vehicle of unknown make or model.

Police said the victim was not taken to a hospital but instead taken home. He was later found unresponsive in the shower and transported by Houston Fire Department paramedics to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators initially opened an investigation into the incident and determined the death was a result of the vehicle crash.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact Houston police at 713-247-4065 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
