Father shot to death fighting with intruder during home invasion on Houston's south side

HOUSTON – A 55-year-old father was shot to death Monday in a home invasion on Houston's south side, police said.

Relatives identified the victim as James Bolden, 55.

Police said two men wearing hoodies ended up inside the home on Grassmere and Ferdinand at about 3:15 a.m. Monday demanding money from the homeowner.

The victim’s wife stepson and stepdaughter were home at the time. They told investigators two men crawled through an unlocked window to get inside their home.

"They came in the house and they said 'where's the money at,' so they started fighting in the hallway and then I heard gunshots fired," Bolden's stepson said.

Police said the homeowner struggled with one of them and they shot him at least once.

Bolden was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he died.

"I'm heartbroken because I just lost my brother, whoever did this, I don't know why would do something like that because he's a friendly type of person," Bolden's brother said.

Family members said Bolden recently married his wife outside the same home he suffered the fatal blow.

“It was beautiful but for somebody to just take his life like that, that’s not right at all,” said the victim’s cousin Deatra Powell. “He didn’t deserve it. He was a good guy. Went to church every Sunday.”

Police said the two suspects, who were about 17 years old and got away with cash.
