Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of General Ignacio Zaragoza's 1862 victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. The day is celebrated in the United States with festive music, drinks and food.
Several restaurants, bars and communities in Houston will extend the celebration throughout the weekend.

Live art show at AG Antiques:
Experience Mexican art and a live demonstration by artist Efren Gonzalez, who will be creating an art piece at AG Antiques in the Heights from noon to 3 p.m.
Cinco de Mayo '17 Margarita Throw Down:
The Margarita Throw Down at Hotel Derek benefits several Houston charities. The night starts with $1 margaritas and a tequila concoction competition. Tickets are $25 a person. The event is from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday.
Cinco de Mayo at Historic Market Square:
The free festivities kick off with a live performances by Gio Chamba, Ghido Machine and more at Market Square Park from 6 to 10 p.m.
Miller Outdoor Theater:
The free family event features live music from Tlen-Huicani and Villalobos Brothers starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
LULAC District VIII Cinco de Mayo Parade:
A festive parade kicking off at Minute Maid Park at 10 a.m. Saturday.
El Big Bad:
The restaurant's seventh annual Cinco de Mayo celebration is a full weekend event featuring, DJs, liquid nitrogen margaritas, tequila sampling a flee market and a Sunday brunch.
Event times vary and admission is free before 4 p.m. and $10 after.
La Calle Tacos:
All you can eat menudo, pozole and birria paired with micheladas and a Mexican beer selection. The restaurant also has various deals throughout the weekend in celebration of Cinco de Mayo. Stop by anytime between 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. all weekend.
Piñatafest:
An art house pop-up party with street tacos, smoked pork and brisket, street corn and a performance by Ballet Folklorico Azteca, Heaven-Lee Acosta Mariachi and Boricua Soul Entertainment. The two-day event also includes Pinata making.The fun happens from 6 to 9 p.m. May 5 at The Historic R.B. Everett Building.
East End Cinco de Mayo Block Party:
A free block party featuring a performance by Selena impersonator, Amanda Solis happens at 4 p.m. Friday at Satellite Bar.
Cinco de Mayo Dance Party:
Party at South Beach with your favorite throwback Latin hits including Selena, Thalia, Ricky Martin, Paulina Rubio Enrique Iglesias and more. The party starts at 9 p.m. Friday at South Beach.
Cinco de Mayo Washington Block Party:
A free event celebrating with DJs, Piñatas, tequila and Mariachi, starting at 2 p.m. Friday at LaMacro.
Traders Village:
End the weekend with fajitas, turkey legs, margaritas, beer and family activities from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Traders Village.
