GALVESTON – Houstonians may be making their way to Galveston to enjoy some beach time this weekend, but the tourists have already beaten them to it.
“We drive down here from Tulsa every Memorial Day weekend,” Robert Jones said.
“It's 50 and rainy and cold in Wisconsin, so we're enjoying the beach for sure,” Jesse Sorkness said.
“First time I came to Galveston was in ’65,” Vic Massey said.
Vic Massey and his wife came in from Tyler, Texas, last week to enjoy the island life.
“Mostly we just relaxed on the beach,” Jean Shore-Massey said.
“Be a lot shorter conversation if we say what I don't like,” Vic said.
We found them in La King’s Confectionary in The Strand Historic District. They said it’s a must stop for many Galveston tourists.
“We got a huge ice cream cone yesterday that took lots of proper technique of licking to keep it from (dripping) all over you. And then we just tried pineapple soda. It was wonderful,” Jean said.
“My name is Eli,” Eli Jones said.
Robert Jones and his very talkative 2-year-old son Eli traveled to Galveston from Oklahoma, which is an annual affair for the family. Not to mention getting a special treat.
“Vanilla frappuccino. Doesn't sound very masculine, but I don't care,” Robert said.
Then there’s the sandcastle-building Sorkness family.
“We're going to hit the beach today before the crowds, and then we'll hit some tourist stuff in town when all the people are out here for the beach,” Jesse said.
“(Is this better than school?) Yeah. (Why?) Because you can go to the beach and the zoo. (Do you think your teacher will be upset when she hears that?) Hehe, no,” Ethan Sorkness said.
