The SUV struck the pole so hard that the engine and a tire flew into a nearby pond, police said.
Moments after impact, the vehicle caught fire.
A male witness saw the crash and tried to help the driver, police said. He was unsuccessful.
Emergency personnel were able to remove the driver from the vehicle, police said. He suffered severe injuries and burns and was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Police said the man was the only occupant of the vehicle. He has not been identified.
It’s unknown if alcohol played a factor in the crash, according to police.
The westbound lanes of the feeder road were closed for several hours while officials cleared the scene.
