HOUSTON – “He was destined for great things,” Norris Rhines, the former principal at Smiley High School, said.
First impressions can speak volumes about a person’s character.
When Rhines first met Devon Wade all those years ago, he remembers a smart, driven young man with impeccable character.
“He didn't mind taking on extra responsibilities, like speaking to kids, especially younger kids that were in high school for the first year,” Rhines said.
Wade joined the group “No More Victims” in 2004 to mentor children of incarcerated parents, in hopes of empowering them to overcome life’s obstacles. Wade also played in the marching band and was on the track team. Rhines said that’s his fondest memory of him.
“They were constantly calling his name … Devon, Devon, Devon,” Rhines said. Everything he did, he did with excellence.
Rhines hopes those who knew Wade will honor him through his accomplishments.
A candlelight vigil will be held for Wade at 7 p.m. Thursday at 10725 Mesa Drive in Houston, at the North Forest High School.
