At least 1 killed, up to 15 injured when tour bus from Houston overturns on Mexican highway

LOS RAMONES, Mexico – At least one person was killed and several others injured Tuesday when a tour bus headed to Monterrey, Mexico, from Houston rolled over.

Police in Nuevo Leon said there were 39 passengers on the bus when it overturned in the southbound lanes of the Reynosa-Monterrey Highway in Los Ramones.

A man in his 50s, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Fernando Garcia stopped by Pergasso’s Houston bus terminal to see if he could find out what happened. His two sons, ages 12 and 16, were on the bus. He said he was able to get in touch with them.

They sent their father a picture of the accident scene.

“We were scared,” said Garcia. “We didn't think it was that bad. I asked him to send me a picture to see how bad it was and once he did, we were alarmed.”

One of Garcia's sons described the moments after the crash to his father.

"There was a lot of panic and many people on the floor with blood," said Garcia.

The bus crash happened along a highway in the state of Nuevo Leon about an hour before it was due at its destination in Monterrey.

Garcia said his youngest son told him he thought he lost consciousness.

“He thought he fainted because when he woke up he already had someone tending to him," Garcia said.

Up to 15 other passengers were taken with various injuries to Hospital Muguerza Obispado in Monterrey.

Police said another bus would transport the uninjured passengers.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
