HOUSTON – A Rice University police officer has been identified as the victim of a fatal crash Thursday on the North Freeway.
The crash happened about 5:15 p.m. on the northbound side of Interstate 45 near Beltway 8.

Houston police said the driver of a SUV was speeding north on the freeway when it hit the back of a silver vehicle.
The driver of the silver vehicle was killed, police said.
The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene, police said.
The victim was identified as Rommel Espinola, 48. Houston police confirmed that he was an officer with the university's police department. The department's website also lists Espinola as an officer.
The driver of the SUV showed no signs of intoxication, police said.
Police said no charges have been filed, but the investigation continues.
Rice University released the following statement:
"Detective Rommel Espinola, a nine-year veteran of the Rice University Police Department, died as the result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident April 5. He was 48.
"Espinola was a graduate of Klein High School and Sam Houston State University and worked as a teacher before becoming a police officer. He served four years with the Lone Star College Police Department prior to joining RUPD. His many law enforcement certifications included master peace officer, field training officer, firearms instructor, dignitary protection and forensic technician.
“'This is an enormous loss for the Espinola family and for the RUPD family,' said Rice Police Chief James Tate. 'Rommel was respected and loved by his fellow officers. We miss him already.
“'The Rice University Police Department is supporting the Espinola family in this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they deal with this tragedy.'
"Espinola is survived by a 9-year-old son and a host of friends and relatives. Services are pending."
