Chemical fire at La Porte plastics plant extinguished

No injuries reported, police say

LA PORTE – A fire broke out late Wednesday at a plastics fabrication plant in La Porte, according to police.

Firefighter were called around 11:30 p.m. to Metton America in the 2700 block of Miller Cut Off Rd.

Harris County Hazardous Materials Response Team and Harris County Pollution Control were also called to the plastic fabrication plant after it was confirmed a tank that contained dicyclopentadiene – a chemical used in paints, varnishes, insecticides and as a flame retardant in plastics, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — was in flames.

The fire was extinguished at 1:40 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

Roads in the area were closed but reopened just after 3 a.m.

Police said there is no shelter-in-place for neighboring homes and businesses.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
