Loaded gun overheats, causing 5 rounds to go off after someone put it in oven in Virginia

Gun put in oven (Chesterfield County Fire and EMS)

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va – Authorities in a Virginia county are reminding people to never store anything inside an oven, especially guns after an incident in the community of Chesterfield on Sept. 5.

Chesterfield County Fire and EMS said they responded to a call for a fire at a home. When they arrived, the homeowner told them their oven exploded.

Firefighters opened the oven to investigate and found a handgun inside.

“It turns out, someone turned the oven on with the gun inside, the weapon heated up, and five rounds went off,” a social media post from the agency read.

While the agency says thankfully no one was hurt, the situation could have ended very differently.

“When you place any item in the oven it is easy to forget it is there, which can lead to a fire or something worse when you turn it on. You should also make sure to properly store your firearms. Keep them somewhere secure, like a gun safe,” the agency said.
