Houston – What if you paid a company monthly to keep your most treasured possessions safe, only to find out your belongings are gone? That worst nightmare has happened here in Houston.

On November 29 around 5 p.m., Devan Gernert and his brother Eddie Gernert discovered that their Public Storage unit at 11900 Katy Fwy between Kirkwood and Dairy Ashford was broken into, along with nine others.

“We opened it and saw that both sides of the unit were cut out completely. Unit by unit, through the walls and even on the backside in the back unit. So, we just opened up a huge mess,” said Devan.

Devan and his brother initially visited the storage unit to retrieve some pizza boxes for their business, Talespin Pizza. However, upon arrival, they were taken aback by a surprising sight: Eddie immediately began snapping photos -- they were stunned at how the units had been broken into.

Once the brothers noticed the break-ins, they immediately went to report it to the front office, which has now led to an ongoing investigation to find out who did it.

Houston police confirmed to KPRC 2 that their Property and Financial Crimes Unit is looking into the break-ins. They say units were broken into on November 28 and 30th, based on surveillance video they’ve seen. Both times, a white SUV was used. The quality of the surveillance video isn’t that great police say, so they haven’t been able to get too many more details from it.

When asked if the brothers feel comfortable with keeping their pizza boxes at the unit, Devan replied, “For me personally, I think we’re safe because who’s going to want to steal a pallet of pizza boxes that weighs 500 pounds?”

Now the Gernert brothers say they want the storage facility to clean up the mess.

“We’ve been following up to see when they’re going to fix it or clean up the mess. But I’m probably going to go put up drywall myself, unfortunately,” said Devan Gernert.
