African dust moves over Houston, poses health concerns

Sky2 showing the haze left by African dust

HOUSTON – We're seeing dangerous heat in the Houston area for another day.

The heat index is climbing between 105 and 109 degrees on Wednesday, but that's not the only concern.

We are also dealing with African dust that has moved into the skies over southeast Texas.

The dust comes from the Sahara Desert. Strong winds and storm systems over northern Africa have moved large amounts of dust into the upper levels of the atmosphere. The upper air flow pattern has carried a portion of this dust across the Caribbean, into the Gulf of Mexico, and now into Texas.

It has left a noticeable haze over Houston, and it's expected to be an issue for the next several days.

The dust reduces air quality. Asthma and allergy sufferers may experience breathing problems.
