HOUSTON – The man accused of trying to rob another man, but who got beaten up instead, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Odell Mathis, 33, pleaded guilty to robbery charges.
Police said in 2014, Mathis tried to rob a convenience store employee in the store's parking lot.
One of the store's clerks, Mayura Dissanyake, was a trained mix martial artist. He saw what was happening and fought back against Mathis.
Dissanyake was able to subdue Mathis until police arrived to arrest him.
