HOUSTON – There has been a big development in the technology that the oil industry uses to find resources.
British Petroleum said it has taken a giant leap in seismic imaging technology.

BP announced what it calls a major breakthrough in seismic imaging on Thursday. The company said the advanced technology has helped it identify more than 200 million barrels of additional resources at its Atlantis Field in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.
According to a news release, the innovation has enabled BP to enhance the clarity of images that it collects during seismic surveys, particularly areas below the earth’s surface that complex salt structures previously obscured or distorted. The sharper seismic images mean that BP can drill new development wells in deepwater reservoirs with higher confidence and accuracy.
“This technological breakthrough has essentially allowed our team to find a new oil field within our existing Atlantis field,” said Bernard Looney, chief executive of BP’s global upstream business. “Given the overwhelming success of this project, we are now deploying this technology across BP’s global operations.”
BP provided "before" and "after" images showing what the new technology helps it see. The company said sharper images mean that BP can drill new development wells in deep water reservoirs with higher confidence and accuracy.
