HOUSTON – The entire Houston area is bouncing back and drying out after Hurricane Harvey.
Floodwaters may have devastated much of C.E. King High School, in the Sheldon Independent School District, but Wednesday, efforts to restore this school are going strong.
We got an inside look at the gymnasium, which was renovated about three years ago.
A pungent, musty odor blanketed the room as an army of workers tackled this giant mess head-on.
The gym took on at least 2 feet of water and it stayed there for two days.
Restoration crews were hard at work, slicing and sawing pieces of wood that are soaking wet.
Pumps are sucking out the remaining water on the floor and right now it’s unclear if the concrete underneath is damaged.
The high school’s auditorium is also in very bad shape. The stage floor is gone. Rows and rows of chairs have already been ripped out and the job isn’t finished yet.
The water inside, at one point, reached the top of the chairs. Dehumidifiers were brought in to zap the moisture out of the air.
Students are expected to return to class in 12 days, on Sept. 18. Four of the school district’s 11 campuses suffered some kind of damage.
