HOUSTON – Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a day to demonstrate love and respect and celebration of those who have gone before us.
The holiday originated in Mexico and is celebrated Nov. 1 and 2, when souls of the dead are believed to come down from the afterlife and reunite with their families.

Families make festive altars to honor their past loved ones, with candles, sugar skulls, flowers, food or drinks that person had enjoyed, for their journey back home to heaven.
In Mexico, Dia de los Muertos is celebrated with parades, music and other activities in celebration throughout the country. The holiday is also celebrated in the U.S., including many events in Houston.
