Houston Police Department, community celebrate National Police Week

HOUSTON – To honor peace officers who have sacrificed their lives while protecting our cities, the Houston Police Department is participating in several events and is encouraging members of the community to drive with their headlights on.

The HPD Honor Guard has been participating in the National Police Week Ceremony in Washington, D.C., which began Friday and will run through Tuesday,

The Day of Prayer Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the HPD Edward A. Thomas Building at 1200 Travis St. There, Houston-area clergy members will gather to reinforce the partnership between the department at the community. The public is invited to attend.

At noon Thursday, the Police Week Awards Ceremony Luncheon will be held at the Houston Royal Sonesta Hotel at 2222 West Loop South. The mayor's proclamation will be read and awards will be presented to HPD employees.

To honor officers who have died in the line of duty, an annual memorial service will be held at 7 p.m.Friday at the Houston Police Officers Memorial site at 2400 Memorial Drive, when a procession of officers will walk down the street. A candlelight vigil will then be held and a wreath will be placed on the memorial as a roll call of deceased officers, a 21-gun salute, the playing of taps and a flyover by HPD will take place. The public is invited to attend.

 

In addition to the daily events, all week long Houston-area children are participating in scheduled tours and demonstrations at the Houston Police Academy, where they met with officers and partake in demonstrations from the Air Support Division, K-9 Unit, SWAT team, Dive Team, Training Division and the Community Outreach Unit.
