You’ll also see how Suni Lee, Jade Carey, and MyKayla Skinner fared in women’s gymnastics events that took place early today.
And in track & field, you’ll see several semifinals and finals LIVE tonight. Medals will be awarded in the men’s 100m, women’s 100m hurdle, and men’s long jump. Semifinal events include the men’s 800m, men’s 400m, men’s 100m, and women’s 100m hurdles.
Some big matchups in team sports will play out in the overnight and early morning hours.
The Team USA women’s basketball team featuring Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, and Houston’s Brittney Griner will face France in their final game of group play Sunday night. That game starts at 11:40 p.m. Houston time. A win sends the Americans to the quarterfinals and one step closer to claiming a seventh consecutive Olympic gold medal.
The women’s soccer team takes on Canada in the semifinals at 3 a.m. Houston time. The squad’s just two wins away from winning it all.
And Team USA baseball will look for a win against Japan in the playoff round Monday at 5 a.m. Houston time. There are three players with Houston connections on that team so we know a lot of you are also following the team’s progress in Tokyo!
Yesterday, we mentioned a couple of women from the Houston area would be making their Tokyo debut early this week.
Sarah Robles, who is competing in her third Olympic Games in weightlifting, will be trying to add another medal to her resume. She already has a bronze. Her group in women’s weightlifting competes Monday at 5:50 a.m. Houston time.
Tamyra Mensah-Stock, who made it to her first Games in women’s freestyle wrestling, will compete against Sara Dosho from Japan tonight at 9:30 p.m. Houston time.
And one more woman to watch - Tara Davis. The University of Texas Longhorn secured a spot in the long jump final in track & field. She’ll compete tomorrow night at 8:50 p.m. CDT. Of course, she’ll have people across the Lone Star State cheering her all the way to the medal stand.
