VIDEO: Fire crews battled oil well fire in Galveston County

TEXAS CITY, Texas – Firefighters in Galveston County extinguished an oil well that was engulfed in flames Saturday evening.

The fire was reported around 7:30 p.m. near the Painted Meadows subdivision.

Officials said the oil well had a catastrophic failure that led to an explosion and fire. Both Texas City and La Marque Fire Departments responded.

Shortly before 10 p.m., crews were able to shut off the fuel and extinguish the main fire.

A hazardous materials team from League City also responded to the fire.

As of Saturday evening, no shelter-in-place or evacuation order had been issued.

Texas City Fire Department will continue to monitor the air quality for residents.

No injuries have been reported.
