LEAGUE CITY – A gunshot victim passed out and crashed his car into a League City home Wednesday night.
Greg Morgan was not planning to remodel the front office of his home, which is located in the 2500 block of Afton Ct., anytime soon. Now, Morgan has no choice.
“Last night we were just sitting in the front room watching TV, and all of a sudden, we heard a sound like an explosion. We tried to come out the front door and I couldn’t because the walls had been knocked out of place,” Morgan said.
The homeowner of 23 years said he had to exit the home from his garage. When Morgan walked around to the front, he said he saw a Cadillac halfway inside his front office, where his dog was hanging out.
“Our dog barked one time, Morgan said. “She was actually laying in front of the window that he went through. She’s OK right now.”
League City police said Troy Hogues of Texas City was behind the wheel. Officer John Griffith, a spokesperson for the department, said Hogues was injured in the leg after a shooting less than a half a mile away at the Walmart on W. Main Street.
Griffith said surveillance video from the store shows Hogues inside his car talking to two men in the north end of the parking lot for up to five minutes.
He said the officers are not sure why the men were meeting in the parking lot, but at no time did any of the men go inside the store.
“At one time, one of the suspects was actually inside of the victim’s car,” Griffith said. “Shortly after, one of the suspects fired one round and you can see them disperse.”
Griffith said the two vehicles, both sports cars, one gray and white with a black top, drove toward the freeway.
Hogues made it less than a half-mile down the road before Griffith said he passed out and crashed.
“It was due to shock and actually ran his vehicle up over the median and onto the front of a house,” Griffith said.
Roman Ramirez, a neighbor, said if the crash had been timed any earlier, some of his neighbor’s children may have been hurt.
“They were actually on the driveway just minutes (before), and I’m not exaggerating. Maybe two minutes before they actually moved away playing their games.”
Ramirez said he had something similar happen to him decades ago.
“This is not the first time it’s happened on this street. My house got hit in 1991 by a drunk driver also,” Ramirez said. “And they collapsed mostly the front part of the house.”
Morgan said he’s grateful his family and dog weren’t seriously hurt. He’s working to have the damage replaced.
Griffith said Hogues is in a Clear Lake hospital undergoing his second surgery. He is expected to survive his leg injuries.
