KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with scholarships in 2022. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.
The thirteenth $2,500 scholarship winner of the year is Janie Fields who will be graduating from Wheatley High School in Houston Independent School District.
Fields will study nursing when she heads to college. Her passion to help others was inspired by the care her grandmother received while battling breast cancer seven years ago. In her scholarship essay, Fields recalled learning from the nurse who would come to their home and then caring for her grandmother herself until the day she passed away.
With the support of her mother, Fields has been able to excel in school and participate in National Honor Society while raising her own daughter.
“I want to make sure my daughter and I have a good life,” wrote Fields who hopes her daughter will one day see all that she has accomplished through hard work.
