3-year-old found shot in leg at SW Houston apartments, police say

HOUSTON – An investigation is underway after a 3-year-old girl was found with a gunshot wound to her leg inside a southwest Houston apartment, Houston police say.

Officers received reports of a shooting in the 9700 block of Meyers Forest Drive near the 610 South Loop. When officers arrived, they detained a vehicle that was attempting to flee the complex.

According to Lt. Ignacio Izaguirre with HPD, investigators believed the vehicle was possibly related to the incident.

Later, officers discovered a 3-year-old girl inside the vehicle with a gunshot wound.

The mother transported the girl to Texas Children’s Hospital where police say she is expected to survive.

Izaguirre said the mother was not in the same room as the 3-year-old when the shooting occurred.

The driver who attempted to flee the scene was detained by police for questioning.

Police said there were additional people inside the complex, but there were no other injuries.

At this time, the investigation is ongoing as police received conflicting statements from witnesses, according to Izaguirre.
