Suspect charged after fight outside west Houston nightclub leads to shooting, police say

HOUSTON – A man has been charged after Houston police said he shot another man in the back following a fight outside a nightclub in west Houston.

Police said it happened early Saturday in the 8900 block of Richmond Avenue near Fondren Road.

At around 2:40 a.m., police said Julio Lopez, 35, was involved in a physical fight with the victim, Dennis Mejia, 35.

At some point, the fight escalated when Lopez pulled out a gun and shot Mejia in the back. A security guard was nearby and police said he detained Lopez before officers arrived.

Mejia was taken to an area hospital where he was treated.

Lopez was questioned by officers and was later charged for his role in the shooting, police said. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Lopez was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.
